December 21, 2024“I recognized that there is nothing better than to be glad and to do well during life. For every man, moreover, to eat and drink and enjoy the fruit of all his labor is a gift of God†(Ecclesiastes 3:12-13).
“I recognized that there is nothing better than to be glad and to do well during life. For every man, moreover, to eat and drink and enjoy the fruit of all his labor is a gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13).
A common misperception about people of faith is that we are Debbie Downers and party poopers, obsessed with negative things, like sin and death, and unable or unwilling to throw back and have a good time. This weekend, and every June, we here at St. Boniface bust that myth with gusto at our summer festival. We invite the whole Erie community into our home to eat great food, drink great beer, listen to great music, and take a chance on winning some great prizes, all of which adds up to great fun had by all, including not only our guests but the small army of volunteers who so generously give their time to make the festival happen. At our festivals, we show the people of our community that we Catholics know how to have a good time, and we ourselves have a good time doing so.
Having a good time flows very naturally from our faith. When God created the heavens and the earth and all that is them, he looked at all he had done and saw that it was “very good.” The things of creation are good, and when we enjoy them we acknowledge their goodness and the goodness of their creator. It is true that we can also abuse the good things God has created, by overeating, for example, but that does not change the fact that those things in and of themselves are good. Enjoying responsibly the good things God has made is very much a part of God’s plan for us.
So invite your family and friends and bring your neighbors to our summer festival this weekend on Saturday (adults only) from 6:00 PM -10:00 PM, with live music by the band Timeless, delicious food, and craft beer, and on Sunday from 11:00 - 3:00, with a scrumptious chicken dinner, bake sale, crafts, and lots of chances to win great prizes, including the grand cash prize of $1000. God has blessed our parish with so many good things. Let’s enjoy them together at our summer festival!
